Laboratory Lesson: Painting

TEXT: Types of Art Painting Styles

1) Read the article about different painting styles. Write out the expressions which can be used to characterize each style.

2) Find  2-3 paintings to illustrate each style and make some quick notes about each of them.

3) Imagine you are an art expert who is going to take part in the famous talk show ‘Ted Talks’. Choose one or more painting styles to talk about in the show. Think of an interesting name for your talk.  Write your ‘speech’ for ‘Ted Talks’ using the expressions from the article. Use the information about the paintings you have found. Use your imagination. Watch this talk on ‘Ted Talks’ for your inspiration.

1) Give extended answers (3-5 sentences) to each of the following questions. Try to use more advanced vocabulary.

  1. Are you impressed with people who know how to paint?
  2. What are some of your favourite paintings and painters?
  3. Do you like to watch a person painting? Why?
  4. What’s the most expensive and most beautiful painting you have ever seen?
  5. How much are ready to pay for a beautiful painting?
  6. Do you have paintings at home for decoration?
  7. Would you like to pose for a painting of yourself? Why? (Why not?)
  8. If you could be given the talent to paint, what would you paint? Would you sell your paintings?

2) Read the article ‘What Makes a Painting a Painting’ (attached) and:

a) render it using the following plan.

b) write out all the useful vocabulary and make a translation exercise to practice it.

c) answer the question in the title of the article.

3). Watch the video and write a description of one of the paintings using some extra information from different other sources.

4) Watch the video and write a description of one of the painters using some extra information from different other sources.

TEXT: Article An Introduction to Different Types of Art Painting Styles

1) Read the article about different painting styles. Write out the expressions which can be used to characterize each style.

3) Write 6-8 comprehension questions about the article.

4) Imagine you are a reporter who has come to some famous museum to interview an art expert. Make a dialogue ‘Talking to an Art Expert’ based on the questions and the expressions from the article. Use the information about the paintings you have found. Use your imagination. Start with: Interviewer: Thank you so much for being here and for agreeing to do the intervew. Artist: Well, I’m happy to do the interview.

b) in which country and in which museum it is on display;

c) what is depicted on the canvas; d) what was the painting inspired by (if mentioned).

3) Watch the video and name the 10 most famous painters in the world mentioned in the video. Write out the following information about each painter: a) the name of the painter b) the country the painter originated from; c) the time when he lived; d) what art movement and style the painter followed; e) the painter’s most famous works.

4) Write two description essays (250 words each) a) about one of the paintings mentioned in the first video; b) about any painter mentioned in the second video.

TEXTBOOK: АРАКИН UNIT 5: PAINTING

1). Study the Topical Vocabulary (Arakin, p. 161-162). Make sentences of your own using the vocabulary under study. (You can use examples from dictionaries as well.)

2) Read the text about Thomas Gainsborough (pp 162-164) and answer the questions (ex 4, p 165) .

3) Read the article ‘What is Contemporary Art? An In-Depth Look at the Modern-Day Movement’. Write a short description of the main types of contemporary art mentioned in the article. Write out all the terms related to art and their short characteristics as in the example.

Example:

Painting —  the practice of applying paint, pigment, color or other medium to a solid surface (called the «matrix» or «support»). The medium is commonly applied to the base with a brush, but other implements, such as knives, sponges, and airbrushes, can be used. The final work is also called a painting. Painting is an important form in the visual arts.

4) Prepare a talk about a contemporary painter. Use the vocabulary under study.
